The temporal structure of the environment may influence range expansions during climate warming

Here we show that environmental fluctuations can promote the establishment of non-native species moving into new habitats as a result of global warming. Specifically, as temperatures rise, highly autocorrelated, red noise environments provide temporal windows of opportunity just long enough to allow non-natives to invade and outcompete native species.
