Temporally Autocorrelated Environmental Fluctuations Inhibit the Evolution of Stress Tolerance

This study shows that evolutionary shifts are controlled by the way in which selection pressure is distributed over time. We used a combination of virus evolution experiments and theory to show that the evolution of a key trait - stress tolerance - is inhibited by 'reddening,' or low-frequency fluctuations, in the dynamics of the environment.
